A couple years ago, I went to Coney Island for the first time. At some point, I stumbled into a hot pink store on the boardwalk that was full of cool clothes!
I was enticed by a charming mannequin with no hands, and took the following lomo photo of him:
I bought a shirt on the spot and eventually came back for another.
This shirt commemorates the Elephant Hotel in Coney Island. I know it burned down in the late 1800s, but I can’t find much more info. Either way, it’s a rad shirt!

This post is such great timing! Just today I was looking through my old photos of when I lived in NY; there is one of me sitting on my cousin’s shoulder in front of the Coney Island Thunderbolt (it was ’82 or 3 so it probably closed already). I wanted to find it to compare that Luna Park to the Luna Park here in Melbourne. Looking for information on the Ingersoll Luna Parks histories I found this site: (http://mmcsl.com/coney/html/page009.htm#eli) that said that the Coney Island Luna Park was built on the site of the elephant. I had always thought that the Coney Island-elephant association was because of Thomas Edison killing an elephant as a publicity stunt there to demonstrate the dangers of alternating current. But I guess it is from the hotel.
We are big Lola Staar fans. She influenced us greatly when we met her here in Tokyo. An inspiration!
