Thursday was the opening of the OMG Pwn!es group show that I was in, at Sequential Art Gallery in Portland!
I was super sad to not be able to attend, but from the pictures, it looks like it was a great time.

I was especially pleased that my pony sold within the first hour of the opening.
It also went to the same people that purchased my friend Myrrh’s pony, as well as my friend Mary-Suzanne’s pony.
Now they won’t get lonely!

The gallery hasn’t taken up close shots of individual ponies just yet, but I’ll be sure to make a post with my pony once it’s been photographed.

In the meantime, can you guess which one is mine??

For Sequential Art Gallery’s second annual group show, artists from a range of backgrounds have submitted My Little Ponies (and a few very special “fakies”) that have been painted, carved, sculpted, bejeweled, and–well, you’ll see…

With a predominantly female bill of artists, both local and out-of-state, we are excited to bring you these reinterpretations of the popular childhood toy. Artists have had complete freedom in how they modify their pony because this show has absolutely no affiliation with the Hasbro corporation. And yes, we have been accepting “NSFW” submissions. Welcome, fans of all that is cute and twisted!

I went to SDCC. I still haven’t quite recovered-almost a month later.
So many friends of mine-from so many different geographical locations, and so many different times in my life– were in attendance. The amount of things and places and people I managed to see and do is nothing short of dizzying, so I’ll do my best to summarize.

The anthology I was in last year, Comic Book Tattoo, won an Eisner award for Best Anthology!
How cool is that?
I’m really honored to have been in this book at all, and it’s extra exciting to have the book be recognized in such a big way.

Last week, my friends and I went to the Psychotronix Film Festival.

The Psychotronix Film Festival shows only 16mm films, the vinyl of visuals, an archaic medium that brings us wondrous images of a near forgotten time. Antiquated commercials, neglected cartoons, previews from old movies, various short subjects which may have been intentionally educational then that are now just unintentionally funny.

This is the third time I’ve gone, and I know that in 6 months I’ll be back for more.
They have the screening in a college lecture hall. We were passing notes.

We also went to see Why? together at the Independant. Yoni didn’t have the rest of the band with him, so he just played a Rhodes and acted nervous. It was adorable.

Later in the week, my work went on a field trip to the California Academy of Sciences.

The Living Roof reminded me of teletubbies.

This albino dude is my friend.

He totally just had epic noms.

The lettering on these labels made me swoon.

This series was thought up in New York when I was at Economy Candy with Marie & Lola.
It was there that I purchased the 1 pound sugar daddy that you see before you.
Clearly this giant candy was made to cover my nekkid.

Marie was nice enough to transport said candy from New York, to LA, to the Madonna for me.
Thanks Marie!!

I had originally planned on getting a ton of regular sized Sugar Daddies for the rest of the photo, but I learned it’s incredibly difficult to find Sugar Daddies in bulk. At the last second I grabbed two giant bags of candy at Smart & Final that weighed in at 7 pounds.

Thanks to Evan Hayden for assisting me in shooting these self-portraits. We shot all Annie Liebowitz style with me telling him how to frame it & he was more than patient with me as I rolled around on the carpet. Also thanks to my whole crew for making me laugh and helping clean the giant mess of candy off the floor.

What is 24 hour comic day?

put simply: 24 pages in 24 hours.
Here’s my second page (the first is the title page, and I’ll be posting that last):

It was a departure for me. I’ve been pushing the amount of textures and collage stuff in my work for a little while,
partly influenced by the non-digital work I’ve been doing (which deserves a post one of these days)
& I did a few sketchbook/collage things digitally recently that people responded well to.…
So for the challenge, I decided to really embrace that collage aesthetic and let go of illustration a little if the page or time limits called for it.

I’ll be posting this comic a page or 2 at a time over the next couple weeks.

I am both satisfied and shocked that I made it through all 24 hours, and left with 24 pages in hand.

Extra thanks to my writer, Mary Bee! I couldn’t have done it without you!

I imagine I will still be reeling from my week in the desert for some time, so please forgive me if my brain is still somewhere in Nevada for a few days.
Burning Man held many, many magical moments for me, but here are some of the highlights:

+ Taking over the man

My friend Slim orchestrated this amazing act of tomfoolery where the second floor of the man tower was turned into a dance party for an evening. There was a velvet rope, a bouncer, and a list. I could try to explain it, but my lovely friend Matt from current.tv covered the event and put this terrific little video together that does a much better job of explaining what it was like:

+ Singing Barber atop Babylon

If you’ve been my friend for a long time, you might know that I used to be a vocal major & I sang quite a bit of opera.
It was then that I became familiar with Samuel Barber, who is probably best known for writing Adagio for Strings, which is often referenced as the saddest song in the world.
I however, am rather partial to “The Desire for Hermitage”, which was written by a monk and found in the margins of an illuminated bible, then later set to music by Barber.

I sang this song atop Babylon, a 100ft high tower out on the deep playa, at 3am.

It was one of the most moving experiences of the entire trip.

+ The Diner Incident

This event shall not be described beyond saying that I laughed until I cried for hours. It involved doing shots of sugar, and epic mischief. The only other thing I can provide is some photographic evidence:

Reuniting with old friends is a joyous thing indeed.

+ Dancing in the dust storm

During one of several total whiteout dust storms, I did a modern dance improv piece at center camp.
We were at about 5 foot visibility at the time, so only people who were very, very close could see me.
I rolled around in my red & black kimono, got dirtier than I’ve ever been in my life, and inhaled the dust as I danced until my lungs were raw.
I felt so at peace in that moment…alone inside my moving body, working both with and against the elements at the same time…
On the brink of complete exhaustion, surrounded by people but still somehow completely alone in all that white…
It’s a feeling I can’t properly describe.

Much like Burning man in general.
